Lot 140		Byrd, Richard E., TLS Thanking a Chaplain for Suggestions for Antarctic Expedition and for Volunteering to Join Expedition (1888-1957) Richard Byrd Jr. was an American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Offered is a wonderful TLS prior to his first expedition to the Antarctic by ship in 1928. He has responded to suggestions by a very enthusiastic professor of science and chaplain which he writes he shared with his staff. The chaplain also extends an offer to volunteer his services to join the crew for any pastoral needs they might require. Byrd, very politely declines the offer. Lot 141		Three Explorers -- John C. Frémont, Richard E. Byrd and Jacques-Yves Cousteau. John C. Frémont, Union general, explorer of the West and first Republican candidate for president (1856). Lower portion of a document signed ("F.C. Frémont"), 2¼ x 8", no date; accompanied by an engraving. Richard Byrd, American naval officer, aviator and polar explorer. Attractive program for a 1930 dinner given in honor of Rear Admiral Byrd and his associate explorers of the Antarctic by The Merchants' Association of New York at the Hotel Astor, June 19, 1930, inscribed and signed, "To my friend Wallington with great appreciation and all good wishes. R E Byrd" on the inside cover; mounting remnants on verso of program. Lot 142		Encyclopedia Britannica -- Group of Letters From Admirals Byrd and Moffett, J. Edgar Hoover, Leopold Stokowski, Emily Post, and Henry Cabot Lodge. Group of six typed letters signed by "R E Byrd," "W.A. Moffett," "J. Edgar Hoover," "Emily Post," Leopold Stokowski," and "H.L. Lodge". Written between 1924 and 1936, all are quarto size, and all but one are addressed to Mr. F.H. Hooper at Encyclopedia Britannica. Admiral Moffett writes about proofs of articles he wrote, "Air Force" and "Air Ministry"; Admiral Byrd sends greetings for the new year and a gift of apples (not present); J. Edgar Hoover refers to an article on the FBI; Stokowski sends corrections for his article on "Broadcasting, Symphonies and Operas"; and Emily Post is grateful for an offer of "a set of the half Morocco" in payment for her article on etiquette. Henry Cabot Lodge writes the president of E.B. thanking him for a copy of the publication "These Eventful Years." All lightly toned, else fine. All framed to approximately 11½ x 9". Lot 143		Hoover, J. Edgar and Clyde Tolson -- Collection of 20 Items. Group of twenty items, twelve of which were signed by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and four signed by FBI Assoc. Dir. Clyde Tolson, who was Hoover's portégé, life partner, and heir (an estate worth $560,000). The items were inscribed and signed or addressed to George Zografos, who was the catering manager of the St. Moritz Hotel in New York, and his wife Marie. Hoover signed a 1948 signed guest book; two signed, inscribed photos, 1940 and 1946; four typed letters from 1951, 1952, and 1954, on FBI letterhead; two signed Christmas cards; a signed postcard; and two holograph telegrams, one signed with his full name. Tolson inscribed and signed separate photos to George and Marie in 1940; a 1951 TLS; and a 1955 TLS to Beulah Wagner on the death of Marie. Tolson also sent two printed Christmas cards and an autograph note on a postcard signed "J.E.H. & O.T." There is also a color cartoon featuring Hoover, Tolson, and Zografas, framed with a newspaper article. Condition is overall very good; photo borders are toned with some soiling. The language in a 1951 letter in which Hoover says, "Clyde and I have been hoping to get to New York…we often think of you," is clearly written as a couple; and the 1945 postcard which says, "We are looking forward to seeing you….We will bring our own bourbon" is signed with the initials of both men. Hoover's powerful position and illegal secret files on presidents, government officials, and Civil Rights officials protected him from his own policy of outing gay men and women.
